Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan have lately suffered major blows in their cricket careers after being removed from the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) central contracts list. This decision is unprecedented, as it is the first time a player’s contract has been terminated for reasons other than performance.
Reasons for Contract Loss: Both players declined to participate in domestic cricket events authorized by the BCCI. Iyer reported back and groin issues, but the BCCI medical team found him fit. Kishan requested a personal leave without alerting his state team or the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
Implications of the Decision
Financial Impact: Losing their contracts means both players would miss out on the financial perks linked with their former contract grades—Kishan was in Grade C (INR 1 crore), and Iyer was in Grade B (INR 3 crore).
Without a contract, players cannot access NCA facilities without permission from their state associations, limiting their training and rehabilitation options. Additionally, they’re absence from the domestic circuit reduces their chances of being selected for international tournaments, such as the T20 World Cup in June 2024. The BCCI has highlighted that achievement in domestic cricket is vital for national selection.
Future Prospects
Despite these hurdles, both players can return to contention if they perform well in the IPL and then in domestic leagues. Head coach Rahul Dravid has suggested that while doors are not totally locked, steady performance will be required to regain favor with selectors.
While the BCCI’s decision has created a difficult position for Iyer and Kishan, it does not definitely mean the end of their careers if they can exhibit their ability on the field in the future.
