Leadership Split: Is India ready for multiple cricket captains

India’s cricket team is indeed transitioning to a framework with numerous captains in various formats. Suryakumar Yadav has been named captain of the T20I team for the forthcoming series against Sri Lanka, after Rohit Sharma, who retired from T20 internationals following India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Shubman Gill has been selected as vice-captain for both the T20I and ODI formats, with Rohit Sharma continuing to lead the ODI team. This decision represents a deliberate shift in leadership, as the selectors seek to construct a more stable and long-term captaincy strategy, particularly with the 2026 T20 World Cup in mind.

Hardik Pandya, who had been regarded as a potential successor to Rohit in T20s, has not been named captain because of worries about his fitness and performance, despite serving as vice-captain at the recent World Cup. Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach, has voiced confidence in Suryakumar’s leadership ability, citing his domestic cricket experience and past captaincy responsibilities for India in T20s.

The Indian cricket team is taking a multi-captain approach, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the T20 side and Rohit Sharma retaining the ODI captaincy, indicating a bigger strategy for future competition.
